The Caminho do Centenário begins in Vila Nova de Gaia, at the Serra do Pilar Monastery, where groups of pilgrims pass through on their way to the Sanctuary of Fátima. The city, located on the south bank of the River Douro, welcomes the people who pass through the municipality on their journey.
The monastery, which currently serves as a religious, cultural and military site, is considered a remarkable building for its European Mannerist architectural value and for the uniqueness of its domed church and cloister, both of which have a circular floor plan and are the same size. Classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it offers breathtaking views over the Luís I Bridge, the Gaia riverside and the historic center of Porto.
